Bengaluru's Ashwini Ponnappa bids farewell to her Olympic career post-Paris Olympics 2024. The three-time Olympian reflects on the pressure and expectations faced by athletes, emphasizing the need for preparation for Los Angeles 2028. Her retirement is a significant moment for Indian badminton, capping over fifteen years of international representation. Raised in Bengaluru, Ashwini highlights the importance of education alongside sports, encouraging young athletes to have a backup plan. She also admires the resilience of fellow athlete Vinesh Phogat, acknowledging the challenges faced in competitive sports.I didn't get a chance to speak with her, but I believe her aspirations would have been shattered. I truly understand Vinesh's situation. She is a dedicated athlete who has worked tirelessly and fought her way to the final. Her journey has been remarkable, and there is much to be gained from it," Ashwini relates.
Ashwini advises that in order to maintain a strong mental state and avoid unnecessary stress during international events such as the Olympics, it is best to refrain from using social media. "I experienced a lot of negative criticism on social media during the Paris Olympics. While some individuals can dismiss external criticism, not everyone has the ability to do so. I have learned from that experience," she explains.
Although athletes receive government funding, it is essential that the funds are utilized effectively. Not all players possess the same level of mental resilience. Coaches and support staff should prioritize building players' confidence in addition to honing their skills.
The Olympics place immense pressure on seasoned athletes. Handling both hope and pressure is a delicate balance. It all comes down to how one manages expectations. - Ashwini Ponnappa
